Old Warwickians

Peter Groom (WS 1945-56)

Having been very fit all his 73 years, Peter suddenly became ill in early May 2010 with acute myeloid leukaemia. Unfortunately he did not respond well to hospital treatment, but his family of three children and six grandchildren were extremely supportive during the next period of frequent blood transfusions. Hotel breaks and family gatherings in Lewes, together with visits from OWs Bill Whitfield and David Gibbs, together with Peter’s strong faith, helped soften the blow of his death at home in November 2010.

The large number attending his funeral was testament to the affection in which he was held. It was so fortunate that he and I attended the OW 1940s and 50s Reunion in March 2010. We all agree that Peter's years at Warwick were very formative, no doubt helping to mould his character which stood him in good stead in later years, and these qualities were especially evident in the calm and courageous way he dealt with his terminal illness.

With gratitude for the life of this special man and for 49 years of marriage.

Jan Groom.
