Old Warwickians

Matthew Walters (WS 1973-84)

Matthew (Spike) Walters collapsed and died suddenly during a Saturday afternoon cricket game at Great Alne vs. Earlswood II in 2011. He was batting and was only a few runs short of his 50.

Spike was a stalwart of the Cricket Club for many years, in the past being both Saturday and Sunday Skipper and Treasurer. He was the Saturday Vice Skipper at the time of his death.

He started playing for Great Alne in 1982 while still at Warwick School. Not only was he an outstanding batsman but a superb all-rounder. In his career he scored 17,657 runs, including 90 fifties and 24 centuries, and he also took 415 wickets and 154 catches having played in 585 matches. He was partially responsible for helping the Club to be the first in Warwickshire to attain “Sport England Club Mark Status”. More recently his time and energy have been spent furthering the Youth Coaching.

A player with such passion for the game, he will be a massive loss to the Club. He leaves a wife Alison and three young children.
