Old Warwickians

Bob Steane (WS 1959-66)

Bob played in Warwick School’s 1st XI for four years, which was extremely unusual. He was a very successful opening batsman and medium paced seam bowler in a successful eleven which, inter alia, excelled in the local club knockout competition (defeating Wellesbourne and Warwick among others) and losing to Leamington in the final.

He represented Leamington Cricket Club whilst still at school and subsequently Warwick Cricket Club when he returned from York, finishing in his mid 50s.

Alongside his cricket, he played football for Abbey Rangers whilst still at school and subsequently as a semi-professional with Lockheed Leamington Spa. They were a successful southern league club at that stage which was one step below the Football League.

Apparently a northern football league club had wanted to sign him whilst at Lockheed, and he had a trial in goal with Aston Villa.

Bob was one of life’s gentlemen. He attended both Sixties reunions (1998 and 2008) and I’m so very sorry we won’t be enjoying his company at the next one in 2013.
