2009, OWs vs Old Edwardians

OW vs Old Edwardians on Tuesday 15th September 2009 at Moseley Golf Club.

On a lovely, if not very blustery day in mid September, ten of our OW golf members travelled the short distance to Moseley Golf Club to take on the might of The Old Edwardian Golf Team in the inaugural meeting of our two clubs.

Invited earlier in the year, liaisons between the two captains had provided a frame work for a 5 pairing, fourball better-ball matchplay game under ¾ handicap allowances, followed by a dinner and minor speeches afterward.

The OW’s taking to the tee were as follows :-

Mike Barnwell (12) and Peter Gedge (18)
Chris Adams (8) and Pat Twigger(18)
Tim James (5) and Richard Budd (18)
Julian Marcus (7) and Michael Wilkes (18)
Peter Baird (17) and Pip Whitting (14)

Leading off first and hoping for an early shower, Mike and Peter unfortunately ran into 2 Old Ed’s off handicaps of 5 each (and who played to a lot better). The Old Ed’s promptly dispatched our luckless pair a little too early toward the bathroom.

Sadly, 1 down – needing more putts to drop!!

Chris and Pat managed to put their opposition to the sword with much satisfaction, equalling the overall standings, and this was followed by Tim and Richard who gallantly managed a half with the last putt on the 18th.

Match still all square.

Julian and Michael (a school leaver this July and son of Old Ed’s organiser) managed a wonderful victory by virtue of a delightful putt, from Michael, on the 16th green and a solid par on the 17th to take our 3rd pairing to 1 up down the 18th. A half was all that was required and this was duly delivered.

Bringing up the rear, Pip and Peter managed early crippling blows from which their opposition failed to recover leading the team to an overall solid win - 3 ½ to 1 ½.

A lovely dinner, allowed for small speeches of congratulations and a firm promise to organise a return match next year.
