Old Warwickians

2009, OWA AGM

The Old Warwickian Association AGM took place on Saturday 5 December 2009 in the
Conference Room at Warwick School.

Clive Mason kindly chaired the meeting as Chairman Nigel Robinson was unwell (but thankfully made a swift recovery!). The Chairman gave an overview of the current status of the ‘Way Forward for the OWA’ project.

Change of Rules
As the Alumni Relations Officer has already taken over most of the secretarial and administrative functions of the Association, the committee has decided that the Association can now be managed by a much smaller committee. Members agreed that Rules 5 and 6 be altered to read “The Association shall be managed by an executive committee of OWs composed as follows: The President, Chairman, Hon Treasurer, OWA Trustee and Director of Property Co. and the Head Master. The Alumni Relations Officer should be in attendance at the meetings. The committee will maintain the principle of co-option”.

Amendments to the Trust Deed
The OWA committee has asked Richard Thornton to look at the Trust Deed with a view to broadening the ways in which the OWA can spend its funds. Currently, under the terms of the Trust Deed, the OWA is restricted to only financially supporting ‘the members of the Club’ i.e. OWs who are paid-up members of the Association. By introducing some flexibility into the Trust Deed, it would enable the OWA to support scholarships, school projects, non-OWA members of OW golf team, rugby team etc.

Thanks
The Chairman extended thanks to Anne Douglas for her work and support to the Association and was pleased to announce that the committee had made her an Honorary Member of the OWA. He thanked the Head Master for making the school available to the OWA for meetings since the closure of the Portcullis Club, and for his unflinching support of the Association. He also extended thanks to outgoing President John Cavanagh, who had been extremely active and gave such a superb evening at the Middle Temple in April. The Chairman also thanked the Committee as a whole, who have been working hard on the members’ behalf on organizing the OWA’s future.

Goodbyes
Goodbyes were extended to two stalwarts of the OWA – Tom Bellamy and Peter Bailey.

Tom has served on the OWA committee for almost 20 years and Peter, who seems to have been active within the OWA since its inception, has held almost every position within it. Both will be sadly missed.
